Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
Neuro is the nervous system where all our experience is recieved and processed through our five senses.
Our subconscious mind.
Linguistic is language and non-verbal communication through which neural representations are coded,
ordered and given meaning. How we understand and learn.
Programming is the ability to organise our communication and neurological systems to achieve specific
goals and results. How understanding and learning can affect our behaviour.
As humans, we cannot not communicate. Everything we do, see, hear, smell, taste, feel, etc., communicates something to
us, usually to our subconscious mind, where it is stored forever.
If you are in a room with just one other person you will communicate with each other, even if you don't say anything
and you may be looking away from each other you will be communicating. Possibly saying "I don't know you, I don't want to
speak to you".
We learn, or are programmed, from birth. Everything that is communicated to us teaches us something.
When we are born into this world we are not afraid of anything. We learn to become afraid. A person may be
afraid of snakes, even though they have never touched a live one. This could have been "taught" to them by a parent or friend
saying "I hate snakes, they are horrible and slimy. I won't go anywhere near one".
This instils a warning in the subconscious mind about snakes, whether it is right or wrong.
Have you ever been nervous about an interview and been told beforehand to imagine the interviewer sat there in his/her
underwear.
You may still feel nervous but I bet it's a lot less than before.
NLP uses this principle in specific strategies to programme, or re-programme our subconscious mind and enable us to achieve
a positive outcome for any problems we have.
Although NLP can be used, and I do use it as a therapy in itself, I personally prefer to use it during hypnotherapy.
Typically, Hypnotherapy is not recommended for anyone suffering from mental illness.
